Minimum connection time at Dubai International
Emirates files a 60-minute minimum connecting time for a Terminal 3 transfer at Dubai, and the airport itself suggests 75 to 90 minutes as a working figure. Both are published. We advise 2 hours, because DXB is enormous and the 60-minute rule assumes a jet bridge, no queue and a bag that travels without you.
By connection type
The published minimum changes with the kind of connection you are making.
| Connection | Minimum | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Same terminal, one ticket | 1h | Emirates files 60 minutes for a Terminal 3 connection. Published figure. |
| Terminal change, one ticket | 1h 30m | Terminal 1 or 2 to Terminal 3 needs a bus or a long airside walk. |
| Separate tickets (self-transfer) | 3h 30m | You re-enter check-in landside. Nobody is holding the second flight. |
| Leaving the airport and coming back | 5h 30m | Passport control both ways, plus the metro ride into the city and back. |
Almost all Emirates traffic stays inside Terminal 3, and the transfer there is airside: you walk off, follow the connections signs, clear a transfer security check and go. Concourse A, B and C are linked by an automated train, which sounds fast until you are at the far end of A with a gate in C and eleven minutes of walking still ahead. The 60-minute figure works, but it works on a good day.
The costly case is a terminal change. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 handle other carriers, and moving between them and Terminal 3 means a bus on airport roads rather than a train. Add 30 minutes to whatever you were planning. If your inbound and onward flights are not both Emirates, check the terminal on both boarding passes before you decide anything else — that single detail changes the answer more than the layover length does.
What catches people out here
Airport-specific things worth knowing before you book a tight connection.
- A bus gate on arrival can cost 20 minutes before you are even inside the terminal, and DXB uses them heavily at peak.
- Concourse A is a train ride from arrivals — allow for it rather than assuming your gate is nearby.
- On separate tickets you leave the secure area, check in again from scratch, and carry the entire risk of a missed connection yourself.
